Antibiotic Therapy

Since it’s possible that all bacteria cannot be removed during scaling procedures, Arestin may be used to aid in fighting the infection. A small amount of this antibiotic powder is easily applied, with no anesthesia needed. Though it is put directly into the periodontal pockets, it is not an injection. It remains in the periodontal pockets for at least 14 days to ensure continued treatment. There is very little chance of resistance development with this antibiotic. Sometimes, this is placed during root planing appointments to make treatment more successful. It can also be placed during general teeth-cleaning appointments to minimize the need for further periodontal therapies.
